The Overbyte Emergency Boot Disk And System Essentials Builder
Digital Gifts for everyone on the net.

In my not so humble opinion, whether you use Linux, Win95, Win98, Win98se, WinNT, Win2000, WinXP or something else, you will want to build servearal copies of this diskette.

Save to your hard disk in a folder you can easily find.
If that statement confuses you, then save it to the root directory of your C:\ drive.

QUICK INSTRUCTIONS:
  • Create a Bootable Floppy disk.
  • Download this self extracting zip file
  • Copy the contents of this zip file to the diskette.
The easiest way to do that, is to log into the bootable floppy disk, and at the A:\> prompt do this command line:
         A:\> C:\...path...\builder.exe [enter]

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS: Under Windows 98:
  1. Download Builder.com from http://www.overbyte.com/11/overbyte.php to your system. If you don't know where to store it, use the root directory of C:\
  2. Open an MS-DOS window
         Click START
         Click RUN
         Type COMMAND
         Press [enter]
  3. Format a Floppy disk with a boot image.
Put a blank floppy diskette in the floppy disk drive. Use this command line
            FORMAT A: /S/U/V:OVERBYTE
Press [enter] after you type the line above.
  4. Log onto the bootable floppy diskette you just created.
         A: [enter]
  5. While logged into the floppy drive, execute BUILDER.EXE
         A:\> C:\BUILDER [enter]
You will see each file as it is pulled out of BUILDER.EXE and copied to the floppy disk. This process should take about a minute

If you don't know where you stored BUILDER.EXE do this command line:
         A:\> DIR C:\BUILDER.EXE /S [enter]
If that is confusing, it might be worth going to the directory where you have found BUILDER.EXE and copying it to the root of C:\
         copy BUILDER.EXE C:\ [enter]
See closing instructions at the bottom of this page
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS: Under WindowsXP
  1. Download Builder.com from http://www.overbyte.com/11/overbyte.php To your system. If you don't know where to store it, use the root directory of C:\
  2. Format a Floppy disk with a boot image.
         Open Windows Explorer
            Right Click START
            Left Click EXPLORE
Put a blank floppy diskette in the floppy disk drive.
         Right Click 3 1/2 Floppy (A:)
         Left Click FORMAT
Check Create an MS-DOS startup disk
Click START (the button in the dialog box)
This process will take about a minute.
  3. Open an MS-DOS window
         Click START
         Click RUN
         Type CMD
         Press [enter]
  4. Log onto the bootable floppy diskette you just created.
         A: [enter]
The prompt should look like this:
         A:\>
  5. Erase the unnecessary files Windows has put on the Floppy disk to make room for these essentials. Type these command lines from the A:\> prompt:
         A:\> del a*.* [enter]
         A:\> del e*.* [enter]
         A:\> del k*.* [enter]
         A:\> del config.sys [enter]
  6. While still logged into the floppy drive, execute BUILDER.EXE
         A:\> C:\BUILDER [enter]
You will see each file as it is pulled out of BUILDER.EXE and copied to the floppy disk. This process should take about a minute

If you don't know where you stored BUILDER.EXE do this command line:
         DIR C:\BUILDER.EXE /S [enter]
If that is confusing, it might be worth going to the directory where you have found BUILDER.EXE and copying it to the root of C:\
         copy BUILDER.EXE C:\ [enter]

Closing Instructions

Label the disk. I suggest:
Overbyte Emergency Boot Disk and System Essentials

Test it:
Reboot your system with the Overbyte Emergency Boot Disk and System Essentials diskette in the floppy disk drive. Go with the option that lets you read your CD drive(s). When the system has booted, it will tell you the drive designations it has assigned to the CD drive(s). Test to see if you can read the CD drive(s) with
    A:\> DIR D:[enter]

If your system reboots to Windows with the Overbyte Emergency Boot Disk and System Essentials in the floppy drive, you must go into system setup and configure it so that the system tries to boot from a floppy disk before booting off the hard disk. This is not a step for rookies, so if you are not comfortable with this step, ask someone who knows what to do to help you.
Note for WindowsME Users with WinMe you don't get access to the MS-DOS prompt for those real emergencies. If you have WinMe and want to setup the Overbyte Emergency / Essentials disk, you will need to have access to a working Windows98se or WindowsXP system to format a bootable Windows diskette. Once you have a bootable diskette, you can follow the instructions for Windows98 above.

All the best,

Scott Rainey
